Brooding demigod anyone? #coverreveal

And so my non-writing life has been packed to the max, taking on that almost nonsensical level of busyness that marks the 21st century where the digital product has taken its role in the pantheon of gods.

Somewhere, somehow, stealing five minutes here and five minutes there, I completed the third and final novella in my Divine Temptation Series, Hope Restored. For those who’ve read Thirteen Nights and/or Life Reignited, this is Marta’s story. Its about time, don’t you think? Everyone deserves their happy ending.

Marta’s hero is Paean, the brooding, exiled demigod, proudly displayed on the cover.  Their story releases from Ellora’s Cave on July 24rth. I hope you pick up a copy. HopeRestored_MSR

Life Reignited Blurb and Early Reviews

Phoebe lives trapped between two worlds. Born an Amazon warrior, she’s sworn to serve the Greek pantheon. It’s her work as a scholar in the human world that gives her life passion and purpose and eases her heart—which shattered when the pantheon forced her to abandon her human lover.

Alexander Xenos is world renowned classics expert, who has dedicated his life to the study of ancient cultures and promoting peace. His fame and global adventures hide a hole in his heart, ripped out by a beautiful, gentle scholar, who shut him out cold after the most intense love affair he’d ever had.

Thirty years later, Sander meets his long lost love, only to learn she’s an Amazon, the mythical gods are real, and they are about to go to war. And Phoebe, who still sets his blood to boil, is in the thick of it.  He’ll have to prevent a conflict between the Greek and Norse pantheons or lose her again—this time permanently.

Here’s what the earlier reviewers have had to say:

The Jeep Diva:  “This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers shivering in anticipation with suspense, drama and romance. The author paints vivid images of the story with well written scenes and details that transport the readers to a modern mythological and fantastical world. ”

Indy Book Fairy:  “This was a really good story, the story flowed and it kept you wanting to know more.”

I’m on the countdown to the release of Life Reignited with Ellora’s Cave. Its book 2 in my Divine Temptation series, which kicked off with Thirteen Nights. It’s releasing September 3, two days from now. One thing that makes me proud is that the hero and heroine are over 50. They’re still sexy and still got it, although perhaps differently.

To celebrate the release of Life Reignited, I am offering a free ebook,  A Flicker of Power, Divine Temptation 1.5. It was originally released as “In Search of Pink Coral” as part of the Shades of Pink Anthology 2013 and has been revised and extended. Writing: Its One Word at a Time

The wonderful Sandra Danby, my fellow contributor to The Milk of Female Kindenss: An Anthology of Honest Motherhood, nominated me for the writing process blog tour. She is currently working on the second novel in the Rose Haldane identity detective series (how cool an idea is that?). Here goes.

How do you start your writing projects?

I’m never without ideas, as a general rule. But it often starts as a small concept that evolves and shifts over time. I also do well with broad writing prompts, such as in anthologies. Here’s an example of how that works. thirteennights_msr

About two years ago, some writer peeps and I were toying with the idea of doing an anthology. The common thread-a club run by a siren-had to show up somewhere in the story. I knew I wanted to write a love story about an Amazon warrior finding love, as I have a thing for strong, kick-ass women as heroines.   A little research on Greek mythology revealed that Amazons probably procreated by heading over to their neighbors, the Gargareans, once a year—a sort of hit and run baby production ritual. Digging deeper, I found that there was a preference to spend 13 nights together as that was believed to increase the chance of conceiving. Given the standard ovulation cycle, there is truth there. From those various pieces, Thirteen Nights emerged. I made the club called Neutral Ground, based in DC where I live, the location for an annual speed dating ritual between the Amazons and Gargareans in modern day. From a germ of an idea, I built the foundation for the story.

I loved the world so much, I turned it into a series, Divine Temptation. All the heroines are Amazons. LifeReignitedBook 2, Life Reignited, launches on September 3.

So often, once a project starts, it’s easy to spin off additional stories. Once I’ve started to create a world populated with characters I’ve grown to love, I want them all to have their HEA.

How do you continue your writing projects?

I do a broad outline of the main story and try to summarize each chapter into a sentence. Then I just sit down and write. I’m pretty much a pantser with an outline.

How do you finish your project?

One word at a time. Once I complete a full draft, I put it aside. Then I re-read, revise and repeat the process. The third draft I send out for critique and feedback. Then I revise based on the feedback. Put aside, then do a last final edit before sending it off.

Include one challenge or additional tip that our collective communities could help with or benefit from.

Don’t get caught up with what other people are doing. We each have our own style, pace, life demands, etc… Its too easy to feel the pressure to do more (write more words, market more, publish more).  We each bring our own unique voice that we develop and nurture in our own unique way. Be proud of how you do it. Of course experiment with different approaches, but you and only you should be the final judge of what works for you.

Passing the Pen

I am passing the pen to Misa Buckley, an awesome author of science fiction romance, a genre I aspire to write in.  Misa has a slew of books you must check out.

W is for Wave Maidens #AtoZChallenge

Heimdal durch die neun Wellenjungfrauen emporgehoben by K. Ehrenberg

The Wave Maidens are the nine daughters of the Norse sea god and goddess Aegir and Ran.  There are nine of them, each one represents a different element of the waves themselves.

Himinglæva – Transparency of water

Dúfa – Pitching of the wave

Blóðughadda – Red Sea foam, representing the blood after a battle

Hefring (or Hevring) – Surging wave

Uðr (or Unn) – Frothing wave

Hrönn – Welling wave

Bylgja – Big wave

Bara or Dröfn – Foam fleck

Kólga – Cool Wave

In Norse mythology, Odin did the deed with all nine of them, and all nine bore Heimdall, the god who guards the gates of the gods’ fortress. In some myth, they were a randy bunch, helping their mother, Ran, to call sailors to their beds.

T is for Themis..cyra #AtoZChallenge

For the A to Z Challenge today, I’m doing two Ts:  Themiscyra and Themis

Themiscyra is the mythological capital of the Amazons, which is believed to be somewhere in Asia Minor, near the city of Troy, which would be modern day Turkey.  The Amazons took part in the Trojan War on the side of Troy. That is pretty much all I could find without doing some pretty heavy research.

So, I will also highlight Themis, the Greek Titan goddess of divine order, law and custom who held sway over the oracles.  Notably, she delivered justice for divine law, not human rules and regulations. Some tales say she is the mother of the fates.
Bacciarelli Themis

I use Themis in Thirteen Nights to preside over the tribunal which determines the fate of Annie and Tai. Nothing like a Titan goddess of justice to add a little mystery to the outcome. For fun, here’s an excerpt where Themis has her cameo.

Just as the Elder warriors looked ready to storm out, Themis hit a gavel on the table. “I will pass judgment now.” The Elders sat, respectfully—powerful as they both were, neither were strong enough nor stupid enough to defy the Titan goddess of justice, the mother of the Fates and the ruler of the oracles. Even if the magic of the pantheon gods was waning, Themis remained formidable.

“Antiope, you carry the descendant of Hippolyta, the greatest of all Amazon queens.” Annie nodded, but Tai felt her shoulders and back stiffen. Themis was the most powerful deity in the room, her mind her own, her decision final, and they had no clue how this would play out.

P is for Phoebe #AtoZChallenge

The name Phoebe shows up a lot in Greek mythology.  She is, among others:

  • One of the Titans. Mother of Leto. Grandmother to Apollo and Artemis.
  • An Amazon who fought Hercules when he came to claim Hippolyta’s girdle.
  • A sister of Helen of Troy.
  • An epithet for Artemis and for Selene (goddess of the moon).
  • One of Saturn’s outer moons (see below, most of her crater’s were given names from Greek mythology as well).

Cratersofphoebe

The name means bright and shining.  Phoebe is also an Amazon in my Divine Temptation Series.  She is the mother of Tai, the hero of Thirteen Nights. She gets her own love story in Life Reignited, releasing September 3, as part of Ellora’s Cave Vavaboomers series, which covers love and lust for the over 50 baby boomers.
